No border changes as UK raises alarm over new variant


Defence Minister Peter Dutton says the federal authorities may have much less persistence for delayed defence tasks as Australia tries to organize for the “deteriorating situation” within the Indo-Pacific.

“As the government proceeds with defence capability plans, we will expect more rigorous accountability from defence industry,” Dutton says.

“We’ll have less tolerance for project lags and, if necessary, we’ll cut our loss and withdraw from underperforming contractors or partners.

“This firmer approach is commensurate with public expectations, a new sense of urgency stemming from the deteriorating situation in the Indo-Pacific and the consequent need to rapidly acquire defence capabilities.”
